Film Bachelor's Degree Overview

In the School of Film, you are challenged and inspired by a comprehensive film program that unites film theory and filmmaking as you make the connections you need to succeed as a filmmaker or film scholar. PSU offers one of the best Northwest film schools, a place where you refine your creative vision and work with outstanding professors who are active in the film industry and in academia. As you pursue your degree, you’re encouraged to become a part of the film community on campus and in Portland through events, clubs, networking opportunities, and off-campus internships. First-year students can start studying Film Analysis and Filmmaking right away. What can I do with a bachelor's degree in Film?

Graduates of our school have worked in film and television; for advertising agencies and in commercial production; in media arts education; for non-profits and businesses; and as film programmers for theaters and festivals. Our graduates have gone on to Ph.D., MA, and MFA programs at institutions such as Columbia University, University of Southern California, Brown University, Chapman University, Leeds Beckett University, and Rhode Island School of Design.

Counseling: School Counseling Master's Degree Overview

Our school counseling master’s program prepares professional school counselors to work in P-12 public and private schools. Our program prepares school counselors to be change agents and advocates within the school environment promoting equity for all students to grow personally, socially, academically, and to achieve their life-long educational and career goals. We focus on preparing school counselors who are skilled in providing developmentally and culturally responsive prevention and intervention for students and families within schools, who work effectively with individuals and with complex systems, and who collaborate and partner with other professionals and their community to promote the growth and well-being of students.

Program objectives

PO1: Demonstrate competencies required to work individually and systemically with all P-12 students to support their personal, social, academic, and career development;

PO2: Demonstrate competencies required to work collaboratively with caregivers/parents, educators, other professionals, and community partners to support the developmental and educational needs of all students;

PO3: Demonstrate competencies required to design, implement, and assess a comprehensive school counseling program in accordance with the American School Counselor Association National Model and Oregon’s Framework for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs; the Oregon Education Investment Board: Equity Lens; and the American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards for School Counselors.

Graduates of our program go on to find jobs as early childhood and elementary school, middle school, high school, and college and career adviser counselors. Our alumni have worked in schools throughout the regional Portland area, especially within Portland Public Schools.

Design Management Minor for Advertising Majors Overview

Bridging the worlds of business and design, our minor in design management is a great option for advertising management, marketing, or other non-design* majors who want to work in the creative communications industry. Our program gives you the skills you need to collaborate with graphic designers and art directors on creative teams. Through hands-on experience, you will cultivate an understanding of design principles, processes, tools, and vocabulary that have practical application in the real world.

World Language Pedagogy Certificate Overview

The field of world language education will face and, in some regions, is already facing a dire need for teachers. With PSU's certificate in World Language Pedagogy, you can explore teaching as a future career choice by gaining the basic knowledge, skills, and initial experience of teaching in a world language of your choice.
The certificate is available in eight languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Russian, and Spanish.

In our program, you will learn the basic skills necessary to teach a world language, including instructional strategies, curriculum planning, and assessment, as well as the structure and culture of a world language.   • In the Advertising Minor you’ll learn every piece of the business—strategy, promotion, campaign development and more—to be more prepared for the ever-changing world of advertising and marketing, and poised for work in private, public, and nonprofit sectors.
  • The Business Minor in Advertising for Communication Majors provides communication, advertising, and media skills, as well as work with real clients, to understand consumer behavior, develop campaigns, and execute message and media strategies that connect consumers to brands in relevant and creative ways.
