Mellie Pullman has been at Portland State University since 2005. She came to PSU from Cornell University with previous appointments at London Business School, Colorado State University, and Southern Methodist University. Prior to her academic career, she was a quality manager at Black Diamond Equipment, test manager at Litton Industries, and landscape contractor in Park City, Utah. In addition, Mellie has worked in every restaurant position possible (from wait-staff to general manager), started Utah’s first craft brewery, and engaged in other food and beverage entrepreneurial activities.
Mellie has taught a wide variety of supply chain management courses and today predominately works with on-line programs including Data Analytics and Information Technology and Production Planning in the Masters of Supply Chain Program, Production Planning or Food Supply Chain Management in the undergraduate and MBA program, and multiple courses in Business of Craft Brewing Certificate program. She has taught executive, MBA, undergraduate and non-credit students throughout her career at PSU including the Study Abroad program in China.
Mellie’s major research interests include sustainability and supply chain management, food and beverage supply chains, and experiential design. She serves as Associate Editor or on the review board for multiple journals including Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Production and Operations Management, Operations Management Research, Virtual Methodologies, Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development, and Sustainability, Accounting, Management and Policy Journal.
She is currently researching social networks of sustainability, food waste, small grains, and pasture-raised protein supply chains. She works with many regional sustainability-focused food and beverage producers, distributors, and retailers. In addition to authoring books on Food Supply Chain Management, Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Restaurant Design, and Service Operations, her articles have appeared in multiple journals and periodicals.
Mellie is passionate about food and beverage systems. She spends her spare time at her farm-ranch in Joseph, Oregon working with producers, writing books or articles, hiking or skiing (depending on the season). She also loves to travel around the world learning from others engaged in the food system.
