Dr. Joel Owens joined the faculty of The School of Business at Portland State University in 2018. Previously, he taught at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was an auditor with Elliot Davis, LLC in Greenville, SC. He completed an "academic hat trick" by earning his Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees all at the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina.

Joel teaches auditing and financial accounting topics. His research examines individual judgment and decision-making in auditing and accounting contexts. Specifically, Joel's research interests lie at the intersection of organizational behavior, personality and applied psychology, and accounting.

Joel's research has been published in the Journal of Information Systems, the Journal of Management Accounting Research, the Journal of Business Ethics, and Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, presented at universities and research conferences around the world, and cited in stories by Reuters, CFO Magazine, AccountingToday, New York Post, and others.

Joel is passionate about the truth and professional responsibility. He believes that integrity is the accountant's most important characteristic, and he models and emphasizes this concept as he instructs his students. His dedication to his students' success has been recognized with several prestigious teaching awards.

In his free time, Joel enjoys attending rock & roll concerts, skiing, reading and listening to as many audiobooks as he possibly can, and enjoying great food around Portland.
