Department Geology

Applied Geoscience Overview

Advance your career in the geosciences with a graduate degree that combines technical knowledge with practical experience designed to strengthen your job marketability. Whether you're a practicing geologist or preparing to enter the field, Portland State's professional science master's of applied geoscience prepares you for a variety of career opportunities.

We asked our agency and industry partners what skills and experiences they're looking for, and designed a program that equips our students with the specialized knowledge, hands-on experience and in-demand skills such as project management, science communication, writing and data analysis, that employers are increasingly seeking.

For your foundational coursework, you'll complete two certificates in engineering geology, environmental geology or hydrogeology. Internships, projects or fieldwork will replace the traditional master's research project or thesis, giving you the opportunity to work directly with county, state and federal agencies, or private geologic consulting firms. You'll then hone essential professional development skills that will set you on the right track for success.

With our accessible PSM program, you can gain the geoscience credentials you need and our employers want, and take the next step in your career.

Applied Geoscience: Why PSU?

We're lucky to call the dynamic landscape of the Pacific Northwest home. Its active and complex geological processes, from volcanoes and earthquakes to glaciers and landslides, bring the coursework to life. Looking at glaciers on Mt. Hood — only a day trip — can help us understand climate change, while our partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey's Oregon Water Science Center on campus can help us better understand water resources.

Our faculty are leading researchers in a variety of geological processes and hazards, and regularly work with agency and industry partners to practically apply their research to problems facing our communities.

These close ties to the regional geology community ensures that we not only understand the changing needs of the industry, but that we're also able to offer a variety of resources and opportunities to enhance your learning, from guest speakers to internship placements.

What can I do with a degree in Applied Geoscience?

According to the most recent American Geosciences Institute Workforce Report, hiring rates have been growing nationwide for geoscience master's students in the public sector and environmental services industry. The skills required by employers to succeed in these jobs will be the skills that you hone in our program. With a professional science master's of applied geoscience from Portland State, you'll be able to go on to well-paying jobs with local, regional and federal agencies as well as private geologic consulting firms.

Indigenous Traditional Ecological & Cultural Knowledge Certificate Overview

Gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the land and Indigenous practices and how to engage  in a culturally responsible way with Portland State's Indigenous Traditional Ecological & Cultural Knowledge certificate, a first-of-its-kind program in our state and region.

Indigenous peoples have lived sustainably on their ancestral homelands since time immemorial, relying on Indigenous Traditional Ecological & Cultural Knowledge (ITECK), a body of observations, oral and written knowledge, practices and beliefs acquired over generations and continually evolving about the relationship of living beings (including humans) with one another and with their environment.

This certificate will provide you with a unique and beneficial skill set at a time when ITECK is being elevated at the federal level and public agencies and nongovernmental organizations are incorporating ITECK into climate change planning and land restoration and management practices.

In this program, you'll critically explore topics such as the impacts of colonization on traditional foods and community health, food sovereignty and self-determination, Indigenous land management and practices, community engagement and development, resilience, and the re-emergence of Indigenous practices to heal the Land and heal the People.

You'll also have the opportunity to engage in hands-on field work and research with our local, regional, federal and tribal partners, including U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Metro regional government, Portland Parks, Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services, Native American Youth and Family Center, and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.

ITECK is not new, but Western science is finally recognizing its intrinsic value to our collective understanding of the natural world. By learning Indigenous ecological practices, centering Indigenous ways of knowing and engaging in community-based projects, you'll participate in a new career pathway and be prepared to serve and work alongside members of Indigenous populations — in Native-centered programs and nonprofits as well as state, regional and federal  agencies.

Become part of a new generation of emerging Indigenous leaders, scholars and advocates.

Indigenous Traditional Ecological & Cultural Knowledge Certificate: Why PSU?

Portland is home to the ninth largest American Indian/Alaska Native urban community in the U.S., and Portland State's downtown campus is uniquely positioned to partner with the many governmental agencies, tribal and Native organizations and NGOs that are headquartered here.

Our Indigenous Nations Studies department works closely with many of these partners in our backyard. It's through these partnerships that you'll be able to put ITECK into practice. Our students have been part of dozens of projects and activities across our region, including camas and wapato restoration, annual salmon bakes, seasonal seed-scattering and land blessings, land toxicology testing, and work at natural areas to harvest culturally significant plants and assist in land reclamation practices.

You won't have to go far to engage in hands-on learning and research. You'll be part of an ongoing project to reclaim an Oak Savanna landscape right on our campus for food, medicine and ceremony. The site will also be home to an ITECK Center, providing our community with indoor and outdoor gathering spaces for learning, understanding and healing.

Our soon-to-be renovated undergraduate science building, Vernier Science Center, will also house a fully functioning Indigenous kitchen and classroom, gathering area, plant wall and Indigenous library. These spaces, along with our Native American Student and Community Center, will provide you with unique opportunities to connect to the land by growing and preparing Indigenous first foods and medicines and building relationships for sharing ITECK.

At PSU, Native students also have the chance to get involved in our chapters of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society and United Indigenous Students in Higher Education.

What can I do with a Certificate in Indigenous Traditional Ecological & Cultural Knowledge?

Now more than ever, in the face of a changing climate, science and sustainability must center Indigenous perspectives and experiences — something our federal government now recognizes. With this certificate, you'll be equipped with a skillset to do that: apply and incorporate ITECK in the acquisition, restoration, protection and management of culturally significant land; learn Indigenous cultural practices and holistic sustainability models; build reciprocal relationships with the land through seasonal harvests and tending the land; and engage with tribal, urban Native, historically marginalized and other communities.

You can pair this 36-credit certificate with any major or take it as a standalone credential for professional development and career advancement.

You'll be able to go on to jobs with tribes and Native-based nonprofits or bring Indigenous science into a variety of roles at local, regional and federal agencies working in culturally responsible restoration, reclamation, educational and protection practices and holistic/adaptive land management and policy.

Architecture Master's Degree Overview

We offer two Master of Architecture degree options — a two-year Master of Architecture, for those with a four-year-pre-professional undergraduate degree in architecture, and a three-year Master of Architecture, for those who hold an undergraduate degree in any discipline. These two programs provide an educational experience rooted in the poetics of materials and the communication of cultural meaning, speculations on the pleasures and dilemmas of contemporary city dwelling, and the potential of architecture to promote social transformation for the common good.

The M.Arch incorporates a series of design studios taken alongside courses in advanced technology, theory, and the profession, followed by a year-long individual design thesis project. The M.Arch is a two-year professional degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

The 74-credit curriculum takes two years to complete; the 134-credit curriculum takes three years to complete.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Master's Degree Overview

Are you curious about other languages and eager to help learners succeed as they use English? Do you want to work to remove language barriers in society? Our graduate program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) will prepare you to work with people from different languages and cultures and encourage positive change in societies.

With a master’s in TESOL, you’ll gain the skills you need to teach English in the U.S. or abroad, or work in other language-related careers. Graduates of our program have gone on to find jobs in immigrant services, test development, literacy program administration, international student advising, interpretation and translation, and program evaluation, as well as in teaching.

You can also use this degree as preparation for doctoral studies in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, and other language fields.

PSU's MA TESOL also offers specialized academic tracks so that you can pursue your goals with more flexibility:

  • The Teaching track prepares students for teaching, providing them with the knowledge and skills to be an effective, adaptable teacher.
  • The Applied Linguistics track prepares students for language-related careers outside the classroom.
  • You can also choose between a thesis or a culminating experience portfolio to complete your degree. A thesis allows you to pursue a topic in-depth and do your own original research, while the portfolio allows you to polish your projects, resume, and writing samples from the program, so you'll graduate ready for job interviews.

In our two-year program, you will gain practical skills as well as develop a thorough knowledge of how humans use languages and how you can analyze interactions. Unlike some programs that just train you in specific teaching techniques, PSU's program provides you with a foundational skillset, so you can figure out for yourself how to be effective in new contexts.
