Pre-Dentistry Pre-Professional Program Overview

Dentistry is the branch of the healing arts and sciences devoted to maintaining the health of the teeth, gums, and other hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. In addition to general dentistry, there are nine recognized specialties. Dentists must have good manual dexterity while working in a very limited space. They also must be very meticulous in their attention to detail.

Students interested in becoming dentists must complete a specific set of prerequisite courses before moving on to complete four years of dental school. Many dental schools require that students complete prerequisite coursework and a minimum of three years of college prior to matriculation. However, most students entering dental school have completed four years of college and most have earned bachelor's degrees. Students can choose to pursue any major at PSU while completing their pre-dental coursework. You can discuss with your pre-dental advisor how these two components fit together in your course plans.

Portland State offers a strong pre-dentistry program that enables students to complete their prerequisite coursework, earn a bachelor's degree, and obtain assistance in preparing for and applying to dental programs.

Pre-dentistry is a professional track (not a major), but common majors for pre-dental students include Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Health Studies: Health Science. Students can choose any major while also completing their pre-dental coursework.

Prospective students interested in PSU can meet with a pre-dental advisor to learn about the pre-dental track.

Pre-Dentistry is a professional track, not a major. Students can select any major of their choice.

Pre-Dentistry Pre-Professional Program: Why PSU?

PSU has dedicated pre-health advisors to help students plan their coursework, support them in gaining relevant healthcare experience, and guide them through the dental school application process.

PSU offers the Aspects of Dentistry course (1 credit) which is taught every spring term to help pre-dental students better understand the field. It is taught by OHSU School of Dentistry faculty and provides an opportunity to hear from faculty, participate in hands-on activities, and meet with current dental students.

There are a very wide range of clinical and other volunteer opportunities available in the Portland area to help students better understand the role of dentists and other healthcare providers, gain exposure to different clinical settings, and boost their application to dental programs in the future.

Beyond the pre-requisite courses needed to prepare to apply to dental school.

PSU’s Health, Science, and the Earth pathway advising team offers many different workshops and events to help you in preparing to apply for dental school in the future.

Many of Portland State’s departments and schools offer student research opportunities, including Biology, Chemistry, and the School of Public Health.

PSU has the Ignite Scholarship program, developed in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente and Portland Leadership Foundation, which emphasizes a culture of support and community for students in healthcare career pathways that can sometimes be complex and overwhelming. Students who receive the Ignite scholarship will be part of a program emphasizing leadership and mentorship (supported by a $5,000 scholarship), which includes serving as mentors for incoming pre-health students.

Incoming pre-health students seeking mentorship can apply to be matched with PSU's Ignite mentors. This is a one-year commitment (fall, winter, and spring terms) for mentors and mentees.

Student organizations on campus help students to connect with peers pursuing pre-health tracks or science fields, as well as many different multicultural, social, and community involvement focused groups. Examples of student groups include the Health Promotion Student Organization, Portland State Women in STEM, Science Outreach Society, Biology Investigation and Outreach, and the Neuroscience Club at PSU.

What can I do after completing the Pre-Dentistry Track?

Students who complete this program go on to complete professional degrees in dentistry and work in general dentistry or one of nine recognized specialties.

Music: Education Bachelor's Degree Overview

At PSU, we know that the best educators are also the best musicians, so we start by building strong fundamental music theory and performance skills followed by a wide variety of pedagogy and techniques classes, instrumental and choral conducting, and a full year of K-12 teaching methods.

Our future teachers gain proficiency in piano, guitar, percussion, winds, strings, voice, and music technology, then choose a targeted track for their final year: elementary, strings, band, or vocal.

Prospective music majors must apply to PSU, submit a secondary application to the School of Music & Theater, and pass the entrance audition.

Music: Education Bachelor's Degree: Why PSU?

Social Justice and Culturally Responsive Music Teaching

We believe our students will change the face of music education by creating inclusive and diverse music programs that celebrate and energize the communities in which they work.

At PSU, we don’t just talk about social justice, we act. Our future teachers dive deep into culturally responsive music teaching practices including issues of representation, repertoire, curriculum, and classroom management. They participate in our social justice choir connecting unhoused members of the Portland community through music. Our students understand the importance of universal designs to connect all students to music in their future schools. They may focus on band, orchestra, choir, or elementary music teaching, but they are also prepared to teach courses such as music production, modern band, and mariachi.

We are proud to be a national College of Distinction for our commitment to helping students to succeed.

At PSU, you will gain the experience and knowledge you need to make a difference in your career and community.

PSU's Music programs are fully accredited National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and holds the All-Steinway School designation.

What can I do with a bachelor's degree in Music Education?

The four-year professional degree provides all the content and pedagogy to prepare our future teachers for the Graduate Teacher Education Program (GTEP) where they do a full year of student teaching and advanced course work to earn a Master's Degree and an Oregon Teacher’s License.

Our GTEP graduates have enjoyed 100% placement in music education jobs upon graduation for over a decade. Recent graduates have earned teaching positions in districts throughout the region including Portland Public, Beaverton, Vancouver, North Clackamas, Salem-Keizer, David Douglas, Lake Oswego, and many others. Some are teaching music in schools throughout the U.S. and abroad. Students who choose not to go on to GTEP find other positions in music education or general education such as teaching private or group lessons, working in music stores, or working in public or private schools as teaching assistants or in other capacities.

TRANSFERRING INTO THE PSU MUSIC EDUCATION DEGREE

Whether you are transferring from a community college or another four-year college or university, your first step is to meet with an advisor to determine where you are in your journey. In some cases, students are ready to start their music education courses immediately, but others may need additional courses as prerequisites to the music education classes.

POST-BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM

Our postbaccalaureate program is designed to bridge the gap between your first Bachelor's Degree and the Graduate Teacher Education Program at Portland State University, which you will need to attend in order to get a teaching license.

Before you apply, schedule a meeting with a program coordinator to plan a course of study that is tailored to your needs. The postbac sequence takes one to three years to complete, depending on your previous coursework and current skills.

PREPARING TO TRANSFER OR ENTER AS A POSTBACCALAUREATE

The best way to prepare is to review your music theory, ear-training/sight-singing, and piano skills; keep practicing your primary instrument or voice; and consider adding a second instrument or voice. You will be required to demonstrate proficiency on piano, guitar, conducting, and secondary instruments or voice prior to completion of the degree.

Pre-Naturopathic Medicine Pre-Professional Program Overview

Naturopathic doctors are primary healthcare practitioners trained in all the same sciences as a doctor of medicine (MD) but they emphasize and practice holistic diagnosis and non-toxic treatment, and proactive prevention to promote wellness. In addition to the medical curriculum, a naturopathic physician studies clinical nutrition, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology, and counseling.

According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, NDs treat all medical conditions; conditions that are commonly treated include but are not limited to allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, respiratory conditions, heart disease, and cancer. NDs can perform minor surgery and are trained to utilize prescription drugs, though the emphasis in naturopathic medicine is on natural healing.

Portland State offers a strong pre-naturopathic medicine program that enables students to complete their prerequisite coursework, earn a baccalaureate degree, and obtain assistance in preparing for and applying to naturopathic schools.

Pre-naturopathic medicine is a professional track (not a major), but common majors for pre-naturopathic students include Science, Biology, Health Studies: Health Science, and Social Science. Students can choose any major while also completing their pre-naturopathic coursework.

There are a very wide range of clinical and other volunteer opportunities available in the Portland area to help students better understand the role of naturopaths and other healthcare providers, gain exposure to different clinical settings, and boost their application to naturopathic programs in the future.

Beyond the pre-requisite courses needed to prepare to apply to naturopathic schools, PSU offers many additional courses of interest to pre-health students, including Mind/Body Health: Disease Prevention (PHE 466), Communicable and Chronic Disease (PHE 363), Physics in Biomedicine (PHY 337), Gender, Race, Class, & Health (PHE 452), Philosophy of Medicine (PHL 318), Biomedical Ethics (PHL 446), Sociology for the Health Sciences (SOC 250), and many others.
