Music: Jazz Studies Bachelor's Degree Overview

For musicians with an unconventional mindset, you’re not alone in your desire to break the mold. A bachelor of music from The PSU School of Music & Theater’s rigorous jazz studies program will give you endless opportunities for bold imagination, as well as the support to advance your career.

The Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies provides a thorough music foundation with specialized coursework in jazz performance, improvisation, jazz history, and arranging. You’ll participate in immersive performance experiences in large ensembles, combos, and solo recital performances.

Completing this degree will give you the skills and confidence to pursue professional work as a jazz musician and/or private instructor, or go on to graduate school before entering into the profession. What can I do with a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies?

Most of our alumni go on to grad school or a career as a freelance jazz musician. Related careers include: music teacher, arts administrator, arranger, and composer.

Recent graduates have performed in venues ranging from the Tonight Show to Smalls Jazz Club in New York. Some stay in the region and perform regularly in jazz venues, restaurants, and theaters. Others have presented concerts nationally and internationally on tour.

Music: Performance Bachelor's Degree Overview

The Bachelor of Music in Performance offers world-class instruction to students who want to hone their craft in a vibrant music school just steps away from the Oregon Symphony. An undergraduate music performance degree from the PSU School of Music & Theater will embolden you to become a more confident performer and take a chance on your professional goals.

This degree provides a thorough music foundation with specialized coursework in classical instrumental performance, keyboard skills, music theory, and pedagogy. Our nationally and internationally renowned faculty will provide one-on-one mentorship in your applied lessons. You’ll participate in immersive performance experiences in our award-winning large ensembles, chamber ensembles, and solo recital performances.

Completing the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree will give you the skills to continue your study at the graduate level or to pursue professional work as a performer and/or private instructor. Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance

PSU also offers a BA/BS in Music with an emphasis on performance for students who want to use music as a core of exploration for their academic studies. The BA/BS in Music Performance will provide you with a strong music foundation with an emphasis on performance within a broad liberal arts framework. Music History Bachelor's Degree & Minor Overview

For inquisitive students passionate about music, history, and culture, our program in the PSU School of Music & Theater is a rare opportunity to explore a scholarly career in a vibrant musical environment.

The music history major will give you a strong music foundation with an emphasis on musicology. You’ll take advanced coursework in music history and world music, and receive direct mentorship from faculty as you complete a final research project. You’ll participate in a variety of ensembles, including the opportunity to explore non-western music in our taiko drumming group or Javanese gamelan. You’ll also get hands-on experience through writing and editing work for our scholarly journal Subito.

Completing this degree will give you the skills in musicology and a supportive curriculum to prepare you for continued academic study in the discipline, along with the breadth of knowledge, critical thinking, and expressive skills that can be translated to a wide variety of music-related fields and occupations. The Portland State Chamber Choir has won international competitions on three continents and has been called "one of the world's finest choral ensembles." Our opera program, which produces a fully-staged opera with the orchestra each spring and a smaller fall production featuring modern works and operettas, has won awards from the National Opera Association.

Sonic Arts and Music Production Bachelor's Degree Overview

The Sonic Arts and Music Production program is a pioneering combination of music technology and creative inspiration with limitless possibilities for your musical career.

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science in Sonic Arts and Music Production provides a music foundation in music technology, acoustics, basic music theory, keyboard skills, and musicianship with an emphasis in music technology. You’ll learn about recording, mixing, and mastering in our new state-of-the-art recording studio. Our experienced faculty will introduce you to a diversity of technical approaches and musical styles as you work with visual media, live interactive performance, sound installations, and online applications.

Completing this degree will give you the skills in music technology and a supportive curriculum to prepare you for graduate study, with the breadth of knowledge, creative thinking, and expressive skills that can be translated into artistic, technical, entrepreneurial, and research endeavors.

Our alumni are poised to find meaningful work in recording arts, sound design, and commercial music enterprises. Others will pursue the independent artist’s path combining production with performance, composition, teaching, or arts administration. Join them in this growing and innovative field.

Nonprofit and Public Management Graduate Certificate Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit and Public Management is a 21-credit (7-course) certificate program designed to provide existing and aspiring middle managers in nonprofit and public organizations with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in carrying out their administrative responsibilities. After completing this coursework, some students opt to apply to the full MPA program or MNL program; credits taken in the GCNPM program may count toward the MPA degree or MNL degree.

Program Objectives:

Public Interest Design Graduate Certificate Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design prepares future leaders in architecture, urban planning, sustainability, community development, and other fields to aid currently underserved populations through human-centered design methods rooted in the "triple bottom line" of sustainability (social, environmental, and economic). PSU's Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design is the first program of its kind in public interest design in the United States.

The Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design provides an educational foundation for graduate students and professionals preparing to enter the emerging field of Public Interest Design, through study in multiple disciplines and environmental studies, and hands-on field experience, working directly with communities in need. 

Public Interest Design Graduate Certificate: Why PSU?

The Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design is offered through the Center for Public Interest Design (CPID), based at the PSU School of Architecture. The CPID is a research and action center that aims to investigate, promote, and engage in inclusive design practices that address the growing needs of underserved communities worldwide. Through research, design, fieldwork, and public outreach, the CPID's work is intended to promote a mode of practice that is socially conscious, environmentally sustainable, and economically accessible to all. The work of the CPID builds upon decades of progressive practice and research in public interest design by the CPID's faculty fellows and its founding director, Professor Sergio Palleroni.

What can I do with a graduate certificate in Public Interest Design?

The field of architecture has begun to embrace sustainability and equity in practice, as the profession evolves in the face of a changing world. Architecture students who earn a Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design often go on to work in architecture firms and projects focusing on affordable housing, healthy communities, and equitable access to resources, serving communities in need of high-quality architectural and urban design. For students who are not pursuing an architecture degree, the Graduate Certificate in Public Interest Design offers a multidisciplinary view into the ways that design can benefit communities in need, empowering them to creatively and collaboratively address social, environmental, and economic issues.

Chemistry Bachelor's Degree and Minor Overview

As the central science, chemistry is foundational to understanding and improving the world in which we live. From diagnosing and treating disease, through solving the world’s energy crisis, to understanding the origins of life itself, chemistry majors gain an appreciation of the role of chemistry in the economy, in society, in the environment, and in medicine.

The PSU chemistry major is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in the physical sciences. The degree focuses on fundamental chemical and physical systems along with advanced coursework in the sub-disciplines of chemistry.

What can I do with a bachelor's degree or minor in Chemistry?

Chemistry students are prepared for careers in professional health, STEM business and industry, STEM education and policy, scientific communication, research, and related fields.

Trained chemists may work with (or start their own) companies that apply scientific principles to develop and enhance products, tools, and technological advances in fields such as medicine (medical supplies or pharmaceuticals), basic chemical research, sports technology, and environmental, agricultural, and food science. They may also work in sales marketing, technical training and support, and public relations positions.

Chemists who enjoy working with people and encouraging them to learn about scientific principles and emerging issues find employment in schools, universities, museums, and other organizations. They may also work at universities or organizations to develop best practices for STEM education. Science policymakers and advisors directly develop STEM education policy or work with lawmakers to create legislation.

Chemists with excellent writing and communication skills can be employed by scientific journals, textbook publishers, online magazines and science blogs or print/media networks, or by universities, government labs or non-profit organizations, trade journals other entities in positions that require educating the public about relevant and emerging chemistry issues.

Research chemists conduct basic or applied research involving materials and polymer materials chemistry, as well as environmental, analytical, physical, and organic chemistry.

Music: Performance Master's Degree and Graduate Certificate Overview
