Biology Master's Degree and Doctorate Overview

Find your footing as a natural scientist with a master’s or doctoral degree in Biology from PSU. In our cutting-edge labs, you will conduct research, learn grantsmanship, gain teaching experience, and pursue an academically rigorous program that will allow you to succeed beyond graduate school.

We cultivate our students to become confident, exploratory scientists in their own right. Our graduates design and conduct research that pushes the limits of knowledge and often nets our student's publication in leading peer-review journals.

Our graduate programs offer several tracks — from the general master’s programs to the biology teaching program to the doctoral track — that allow students to hone in on their scientific passion.

Public oral defense is required of both the thesis and dissertation tracks, and presentation of results at regional, national, and international scientific conferences is encouraged. Coursework has a larger role in the Master of Arts and Master of Science tracks, but is replaced by a written and oral comprehensive exam for Ph.D. students.

Our faculty is driven to provide the best possible graduate and working experience for our students. We are proud to offer funding to most students who also have the opportunity to serve as teaching assistants.

Biology Master's Degree or Doctorate: Why PSU?

Our department’s supportive faculty maintain nationally and internationally recognized biology research programs that brings meaningful scientific discoveries into the graduate classroom.

In our collaborative program, students are in frequent contact with faculty. Our weekly seminar series also offers students the opportunity to meet and learn from professionals from outside the PSU environment. Research facilities such as greenhouses, natural history collections (botanical, and both invertebrate and vertebrate), and the Center for Life in Extreme Environments serve as resources for much graduate research.

Faculty receive research funding by high-profile organizations, such as the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, Howard Hughes Foundation, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Our department maintains close collaborations with a number of local institutions that provide additional research opportunities within easy reach of the PSU campus, including the Portland Zoo, Oregon Health and Science University, and Oregon National Primate Research Center. Faculty at these institutions can serve on graduate student committees.

What can I do with a Master's degree or Doctorate in Biology?

A graduate degree in biology offers a solid foundation in the sciences that can provide an avenue to careers in medicine or to a profession as a scientist.

Many of our graduates also pursue careers in wildlife management or conservation. Undergraduate degrees with an emphasis in molecular biology, cell biology and/or microbiology also have the potential to enter fields within the biotechnology sector. And for students of all areas of Biology, an undergraduate degree is a virtual prerequisite for continuing graduate degree programs that then open opportunities at the next level.

Anthropology Bachelor's Degree and Minor Overview

Anthropology is the holistic study of human behavior and biology. Anthropologists examine human biological and cultural diversity through space and time and the interplay between culture and biology.

A bachelor’s degree in anthropology at PSU gives you a foundational understanding of how humans operate and interact in a global perspective. PSU Anthropology supports three subfields: Sociocultural Anthropology, Archaeology, and Biological Anthropology. Our department is committed to research and scholarship in “Applied Anthropology” – where anthropological scholarly products address “real world” problems; and knowledge is returned to the peoples and places where the research is conducted.

We offer:

  • A broad-based view of human adaptation, evolution, variation, and achievement.
  • A balanced view of the anthropological subfields of biological anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and sociocultural anthropology.
  • Expert faculty who bring the best research and real-life perspectives into the classroom.
  • Hands-on experience in our campus labs in zooarchaeology, ceramics, lithics, general artifact cataloging and processing, and through fieldwork.
  • Support from graduate assistants and accessible faculty.
  • Electives on a variety of ethnographic courses on particular regional or areas of interests, such as East Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific Northwest.
  • The necessary general anthropological background for those interested in pursuing graduate study in the discipline.

Our alumni have gone on to work for federal and state agencies, for museums, for private consulting companies, and for non-governmental organizations. Many also branch out into other fields, such as healthcare, education, the law, social services, and more.

The Anthropology minor is useful for students majoring in business, pre-med, history, geography, and engineering just to name a few examples.

PSU offers a Bachelor's + Master's Program in Anthropology. Undergraduate Anthropology students may be admitted directly into the parallel Anthropology master’s program (i.e., BA students for the MA, and BS students for the MS) and share up to 20 graduate-level credits (five 4-credit courses) between their bachelor's and master’s degrees.

Anthropology Bachelor's Degree or Minor: Why PSU?

The Anthropology Department at Portland State University was established in 1959 as a four-field Anthropology department with Oregon's only free-standing Master's program. Since then, anthropologists at Portland State University have compiled a long record of research, teaching, and community involvement. Among its distinguished former faculty was Wayne Suttles, the premier 20th-century ethnographer, and linguist of the Northwest Coast.

Our faculty have specific expertise in the environment and conservation, heritage and identity, health, and political economy, and money. We have built strong relationships with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. National Park Service, U.S. National Forest Service, the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense, The Mountain Institute, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Nepal, The World Conservation Union (IUCN), the Lemur Conservation Foundation, the Oregon Zoo, and various Indigenous nations. The Department of Anthropology has worked with Fort Vancouver National Historic Park since the early 2000s, and supported summer field schools. Students have the opportunity to participate in a number of field activities such as a trip to Northern Alaska for field projects.

The Anthropology Student Association (ASA) organizes a range of activities throughout the year to support student learning, professional development, and to have fun. Activities include attending regional and national conferences, arranging colloquia for outside speakers, film nights to explore anthropology in popular culture, and working with Portland-area organizations on volunteer projects.

What Can I Do With a Bachelor's Degree or Minor in Anthropology?

According to a 1994 survey, nearly half of all professional anthropologists work outside of academia in a variety of public and private sector fields from business to medicine to development.

The one piece of advice that practicing anthropologists give the most is to think in terms of skills rather than an academic degree when planning for a career in anthropology. That means carefully planning a program of course work that matches your career interests and ambitions, as well as taking advantage of internship opportunities to build your experiences and skills outside of the classroom.

Our students have gone onto graduate programs such as the University of Utah, University of California-Irvine, University of British Columbia, and New York University. And to employment for federal and state agencies, non-profit governmental organizations, and companies.

With a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, you can find employment in government agencies, nonprofits, educational institutions, and businesses, in positions including:

  • Archaeology technician
  • Analyst
  • Business advisor
  • Clinical research coordinator
  • Community development assistant
  • Field archaeologist
  • Lab assistant/manager
  • Legislative aide
  • Research associate

Department English

English Bachelor's Degree and Minor Overview

A bachelor’s degree and minor in English will prepare you to tackle critical and complex issues, deepen your understanding of diverse cultural issues, and improve your ability to analyze and produce complicated texts. We prepare our students for careers in writing and teaching, as well as professions requiring high levels of literacy and critical thought, including law and business.

The degree in English provides a foundation in literature, rhetoric, composition, and critical theory. In your courses, you will study text and writing that represents many cultures and historical periods and learn critical approaches to texts and issues that enable you to interpret and compare positions, to read closely, critically, and with empathy. You will gain skills by conducting your own research, weighing evidence, and writing with insight and expertise with guidance from our dedicated expert faculty.

We offer:

  • A flexible degree with electives that encourage exploration in writing, publishing, and literature
  • Hands-on experience through an internship advising course
  • Online, hybrid, and evening classes
  • Courses that work with our in-house literary magazine Portland Review, and our publishing imprint Ooligan Press
  • A degree option to pursue a greater emphasis in math and the sciences

The major is grounded in critical and theoretical approaches to literary study and requires a 20-credit sequence of core courses designed to ensure a thorough understanding of the methodologies of the field, in addition to allowing a variety of elective coursework in literature and writing courses in literary studies, film and digital media analysis, and publishing, creative writing, and technical writing. The department also offers an undergraduate degree in creative writing, minors in English, writing and film studies, and a certificate in comics studies.

English Bachelor's Degree or Minor: Why PSU?

Portland is a hub for writers and creatives, professionals flock to the city and have created a flourishing culture and cultivated a thriving local creative industry. Portland State University contributes to this community by creating an environment for aspiring writers and creatives to grow and develop.

Students at Portland State and in the English program are encouraged to take part in our student-edited publications and student support services:

  • Pathos Literary Magazine: A creative publication, staffed entirely by students, that exclusively publishes student work in three issues per year.
  • Portland Review: A literary journal produced by graduate students in the English department that promotes the works of emerging writers and artists alongside the works of well-established authors. Portland Review has been publishing exceptional prose, poetry, and art since 1956 and has been noted in the Best American series and honored by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oregon Arts Commission.
  • Vanguard: A weekly print and digital newspaper distributed for free throughout the Portland State campus area. Entirely student-run, employing about 60 paid student reporters, multimedia contributors, photographers, graphic designers, and editors, its publishing body is the Portland State Media Board, consisting of four students, four faculty members, and one community member. The newspaper and its staff have earned several collegiate journalism awards, including the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association General Excellence Award and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle Award.
  • Ooligan Press: An award-winning nonprofit general trade press that publishes books honoring the cultural and natural diversity of the Pacific Northwest. Ooligan Press is a teaching press staffed by students pursuing master’s degrees in the Department of English.
  • The Writing Center: A service to help students improve their writing and understand strategies to gain critical thinking skills they can adapt to all their writing projects. Writing center staff support students by acting as consultants rather than copyeditors, guiding students through their work by asking questions rather than editing specific text, with the goal of ensuring that the student-writer maintains agency over their writing.

Portland State offers many opportunities for students to engage in the broader creative community in the city through internships and jobs. Our students are able to work and carry out internships while they’re in school allowing them to build relationships and add experience to their resumes.

What can I do with a Bachelor's degree or Minor in English?

Students who major in English go on to careers in many different fields, from politics to book-editing. Writing skills are valuable in every industry, and we prepare our students to be adaptable and thoughtful communicators. Graduates of Portland State’s English program have gone on to careers in education, writing, book publishing, journalism, advertising, communications, politics, public affairs, law enforcement, and even science and technology.

Many of our graduates have pursued graduate degrees in law, creative writing, journalism, business, book publishing, public affairs, and even medicine.

The writing and analytical skills of the English major have long made it a popular major to take before law school—two current Oregon Supreme Court justices were English majors. English is finding increasing interest in medical school admissions, as communication skills are increasingly valued in healthcare and health administration.
