Public Health Studies: Community Health Promotion Bachelor's Degree and Minor Overview

The OHSU-PSU collaborative School of Public Health is an innovative structure, in which we bring the best of two universities to you. Our design is a product of our innovative spirit and values: we bring that approach to you, working to chart your path into clinical, educational, policy, and direct-service health careers.

With five specialized Health Studies concentrations and two minors, we provide you with specialty training and a core foundation in public health that positions you to excel in the career path you seek.

In our Community Health Education concentration, you will learn the societal, community, and individual-level factors that create risk -- or promote good health -- in populations. In particular, you will build skills to identify and address health disparities across populations, define health problems, and learn to design and implement strategies to promote health in the larger community.

We offer:

  • Tailored, individualized advising and mentorship
  • Expert faculty with extensive research and real-world experience
  • Innovative curricula – we bring the community to you through guest speakers, applied learning activities, and a focus on current issues – all focusing on developing solutions to real-world problems
  • Experiential learning -we bring you to the community through a mentored internship
  • Faculty and career development opportunities from both universities

Urban Design Graduate Certificate Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Urban Design at Portland State University, a joint effort of the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning and the School of Architecture, has been created to offer planners, designers, and architects the opportunity to engage and incorporate in their own work the principles and methods of urban design. It utilizes the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region as a laboratory, an urban place renowned for its use of urban design and attention to urban design concerns. This certificate is intended for those who are currently seeking an advanced planning or architecture degree, or who are currently employed as a professional planner, architect, or designer.

Urban Design Graduate Certificate: Why PSU?

Students who participate in the Urban Design Certificate are introduced to a cohort of future professionals dedicated to bridging policy and large-scale urban planning with human-scale design solutions. Building on and complementing the strengths of the planning and architecture degree programs, the UD certificate gives students without design experience training in design representation, interpretation, and storytelling. Meanwhile, it supplements the repertoire of those with a design background with skills in urban and regional mapping, ecological, and economic analysis. Both groups benefit from a robust engagement with urban theory grounded in real-life case studies and scenarios. Most importantly, the certificate cultivates an attitude of exchange and dialogue between future professionals engaged in different aspects of build-environment production.

What can I do with a graduate certificate in Urban Design?

Students who participate in the Urban Design Certificate put their skills and perspectives to work in planning offices, architectural firms, government agencies, and the non-profit sector. Rather than a prescribed career path, the certificate offers the opportunity to explore additional perspectives and approaches that complement other degree programs and career trajectories.

Biology Bachelor's Degree or Minor: Why PSU?

PSU's biology program is distinguished by the active incorporation of research discoveries into teaching programs and by the opportunity to pursue undergraduate research with leading faculty scientists, providing students with a world-class education. The biology major is student-driven and allows you to choose your own area of specialization while receiving advice and support on the best pathway to reach your academic, research, and career goals by departmental faculty and advisors.

Our department is committed to your success—our diverse and knowledgeable faculty, graduate students, and staff are dedicated to helping students achieve their educational and career goals. The biology curriculum is defined by hands-on learning experiences in teaching and research laboratories and by innovative approaches to teaching and learning, including flipped classrooms, special-option courses such as internships, fieldwork, career exploration, and tutoring.

Portland State University's position in the heart of Oregon's economic and cultural center provides a dynamic and exciting environment in which to study science.

What Can I Do With a Bachelor's Degree or Minor in Biology?

Biology students are prepared for a wide range of careers in conservation and wildlife; science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and policy; scientific communication; research; health sciences and studies and related fields. Trained biologists may work in a variety of fields, or extend their studies to the graduate level. Biologists who enjoy working with people and encouraging them to learn about scientific principles and emerging issues find employment in schools, universities, museums, and other organizations. Science policymakers and advisors directly develop STEM education policy or work with lawmakers to create legislation. Biologists with excellent writing and communication skills can be employed by scientific journals, textbook publishers, online magazines and science blogs or print/media networks, or by universities, government labs or non-profit organizations, trade journals, or other entities in positions that require educating the public about relevant and emerging biology issues.
