Update on tragic shooting: A very sad day for Portland State

Dear Campus Community, 

It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I write to you today with details about yesterday’s tragic shooting that took place near our campus. As we shared, a woman was killed at around 1 a.m. yesterday morning. 

Last night, we learned that the alleged assailant, Keenan Harpole, is a Portland State student and a former football player. He turned himself in to authorities in Deschutes County and is currently in custody.

This morning, Portland Police confirmed that the shooting victim, Amara Marluke, was also a student. Amara was an artist and an activist and a vibrant member of our community. Her death is mourned by all of us. 

I am profoundly affected by the sheer tragedy of this loss. My heart breaks for Amara’s family and for everyone who knew her. I offer my deepest sympathies. We will work together as a campus community to heal. 

There are resources within our community for individuals to gather and process their feelings and thoughts with others. I urge students and employees to reach out in the way that they feel is most appropriate.

• The Women’s Resource Center offers services and support for individuals impacted by interpersonal violence.

I urge all of us to take care of ourselves and each other during this sad and challenging time for Portland State.
