PSU responds to coronavirus outbreak in China

The health and well-being of everyone at Portland State University is our top priority. Though no coronavirus cases have been reported in Oregon, we are closely monitoring the spread of the respiratory illness. We want students, faculty and staff to be safe and stay informed about important developments and resources locally and internationally that address the concerns about the outbreak.

Students

Students at PSU are at minimal risk from the virus. Any student who has traveled to Asia in the past two weeks or has had contact with someone who has traveled in China and experiences respiratory symptoms or fever should contact the Student Health and Counseling Center’s Nurse Line at (503) 725-2515 or the after-hours line at (844) 224-3145.

We are in contact with all of our international students from China studying at PSU and our PSU students studying abroad in China about government and health restrictions and advisories.

For those planning to travel to China or who have friends or family in China, the U.S. State Department has issued a warning site that is updated regularly.  The State Department also maintains an informational site on current international travel advisories and alerts.

Faculty and staff

We are in contact with visiting scholars and faculty from China at PSU and others who have informed the university about upcoming travel to China.

As a reminder, all work-related travel plans require completion of a PSU travel authorization form to be submitted and approved prior to travel.

Those with personal travel plans to China should consult the State Department sites noted above.

For all

PSU has created a new International Travel Registry, a secure system for students, faculty, staff and sponsored affiliates to record international travel plans and emergency contact information. The goal is to offer a one-step service to assist emergency communications and access to University-approved international health insurance.

To learn more about the coronavirus, go to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s coronavirus website and to a related CDC site on how to prevent the spread of the virus.

PSU will continue to monitor the outbreak closely in partnership with our local and state public health officials and others and will report significant developments as needed.
