PSU President Statement on protests

Dear Colleagues,

On Sunday night, protesters damaged several buildings across Portland, including the Portland State Campus Public Safety office, shattering windows and damaging the front door. PSU employees were at work during the incident. No one was physically injured, and the damage on campus has been cleaned up.

The safety of all PSU employees is of paramount importance to this university and to me personally as its leader. Our Human Resources department is reaching out to employees affected by last night’s incident. PSU’s Employee Assistance Program is available to any staff or faculty member affected by this event or any other.

Please know that PSU supports the right to peacefully protest on our campus. We are grateful that most who have participated in protests in our city over the last several months have chosen to use peaceful tactics to give voice to their concerns and positions. At the same time, we do not in any way condone violence, including the violent acts by some who participated in last night’s protest.

Today and every day, I stand with the dedicated employees of Portland State University, and I thank you for your service to our students and our community.

Sincerely,

Stephen Percy
President
