Take your love for K-pop, K-dramas, Korean food, and culture to the next level by minoring in Korean at Portland State University. In our program, you'll learn to speak, read, and write Korean, all while exploring what makes Korea's culture so unique and exciting.
More than 80 million people speak Korean, and it’s one of the 15 languages that the U.S. Department of State says is critical to national security and economic prosperity. Knowing Korean can open up new opportunities like:
- Working in global business, travel, or diplomacy
- Teaching English or becoming a translator in Korea
- Going to grad school for Asian studies or international relations
- Joining the booming Korean pop culture world, including music, movies and TV
PSU's Korean minor combines language courses with culture and linguistics courses. For your electives, choose from English-language classes on music, film, Asian art and modern East Asia history.
We offer you flexibility, giving you the chance to learn from home, online or in a hybrid format.
Immerse yourself in the language and culture through study abroad programs. We offer an exchange program with South Korea’s University of Ulsan, or you can apply to participate in a fully funded immersive summer program at several universities in Korea.
Outside of the classroom, join active student clubs like the Korean Club and the Korean Student Association, and attend lectures and events hosted by PSU's Institute for Asian Studies.
Korea is one of Oregon’s top five trading partners, and many Korean companies, including Samsung, LG and Hyundai, continue to seek qualified employees as they expand.
Our minor gives you a good working knowledge of the Korean language and understanding of Korean culture. You’ll have an edge for jobs in the tech industry, diplomacy, business and more. Many students also pursue opportunities to teach English in Korea and travel after graduation.
