Infant/Toddler Mental Health Graduate Certificate

Applications are being accepted for our incoming cohorts beginning Fall 2020 (deadline to apply is July 1, 2020) and Winter, 2021 (deadline to apply is November 15, 2020).


The graduate certificate in Infant/Toddler Mental Health: A Relationship-Based Approach is designed for professionals who are working with families who have children from the prenatal period to 36 months of age. This program is appropriate for professionals who are mental health, special education, child welfare, and social service providers; home visitors; teachers; childcare providers; and health care professionals. It is also appropriate for supervisors of these direct-service providers.

Participants become knowledgeable about current research and interventions from the field of infant mental health.

Pathway to a master’s!

Completing the ITMH Graduate Certificate gets you half-way to a Master’s! With just a few more courses, and a relatively simple application process, you can take the next step in your career and earn a Master’s in Early Childhood: Inclusive Ed and Curriculum & Instruction with a specialization in Infant-Toddler Mental Health.   • Protective factors in family environments
  • Risk factors for mental health problems in family environments
  • Social, emotional, and developmental difficulties of infants, toddlers, and their families
  • Early screening and assessment
  • Theories of treatment
  • Home- and community-based intervention
  • Diagnostic classification systems for mental health disorders in young children
  • Collaborative service approaches

Twenty graduate credits are earned over four quarters of online instruction. An interprofessional team of faculty plans the curriculum content and provides mentoring support during the program. An individually tailored portfolio is part of the program.

For students not currently admitted to the graduate certificate, some courses can be taken individually. For students admitted later to the graduate certificate, these courses will count towards the graduate certificate (if within a 7 year period). Be sure to check with a program advisor.

Certificate Information

Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a Graduate Certificate in Infant Toddler Mental Health.
