John Hall is a Professor of Economics at Portland State University. He earned his PhD. at the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research and joined the Economics Department in 1985 as a specialist in Central and Eastern Europe.

John is passionate about teaching and mentoring students. He supervises undergraduate research and honors papers and has guided undergraduates to become excellent writers. He has also worked with graduate students in their research papers.

John is a long-time member of many professional organizations including the Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE), the editorial board of The Journal of Economic Issues, was on the Board of Directors for Association for Institutional Thought (AFIT), and is actively involved in European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE).

John’s teaching has been widely recognized. At PSU, John won three outstanding teaching awards. He was also awarded two teaching and research Fulbright grants. He has had a career-long fellowship with the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation where he supports research in Germany. He also was a Research Professor at the Leibniz-Institute for Economic Research in Halle, Germany.

He is a founding faculty member in the International and Global Studies program. He has added new courses to the department that include “Comparative Economic Systems,” “Institutional Economics,” and “History of Economic Thought.”
