FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A MICROCREDENTIAL?
A microcredential is a short, focused credential designed to provide in-demand skills, know-how, and experience in a particular area. These programs are shorter than typical courses and great for learning something new, boosting your resume, or exploring interests. Once you complete the necessary work and assessments, you earn a digital badge to showcase your new skills, which you can display on your resume, LinkedIn, and other professional spaces.
Some microcredentials are offered at Portland State University as part of a for-credit course, and not as a stand-alone non-credit offering. These are not listed in the micro-credential catalog, but may appear in course descriptions or departmental listings. Please contact a department directly if you want a comprehensive list of all course-embedded microcredentials offered for a given subject.
WHO CAN EARN A MICROCREDENTIAL?
Any enrolled PSU student or PSU staff or faculty member can sign up for microcredentials. They’re perfect whether you're looking to complement your major, build specialization, enhance your job prospects, or just explore something cool and new!
WHO TEACHES MICROCREDENTIALS?
Microcredentials are taught by PSU faculty and staff and sometimes by experts from various industries. These instructors bring real-world experience and specialized knowledge to the classroom, helping you gain practical and relevant skills quickly.
HOW DOES A MICROCREDENTIAL WORK?
You’ll engage in a focused learning experience that could be online, in-person, or a blend of both, fitting easily into your schedule. These courses require at least 10 hours of learning, culminating in an assessment to earn your badge. It’s a great way to learn quickly and get credit for it too!
HOW MUCH DOES A MICROCREDENTIAL COST?
Good news— microcredentials at PSU are offered at no additional cost to you as a student, faculty, or staff member. This means you can pick up extra skills, explore new interests, or advance your career prospects without worrying about extra tuition fees.
