The Portland State University School of Music & Theater has released the 2025 edition of Subito, the academic journal authored, edited, and published entirely by PSU's musicology and ethnomusicology students. Since its inaugural publication in 2018, Subito has showcased the exceptional scholarship of PSU's School of Music & Theater students, supporting their journey to becoming the next generation of music journalists and academics.
The theme of this year’s edition explores the topic of musical tuning systems and microtonality, where musical compositions are not restricted to a single culturally defined system. The edition features interviews with composer Renée Favand-See and interdisciplinary artist John Niekrasz, who offer diverse solutions for getting out of one's own way in the creative process. Also featured in the issue is a formal analysis of the work of Arvo Pärt, a piece on the poetic ruminations of singing Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and more.
Lead editor Richie Greene writes, "Over the course of creating this eighth issue of Subito we’ve witnessed the startling developments of the world: international political strife, progressing environmental decline, and continued attempts of cultural erasure on both large and small scale. To witness students bravely remain critical and passionate—striving nonetheless to describe that which is intangible and worth articulating—brings me a great deal of hope."
Subito 2025, along with all past editions, is free to download on the journal’s website.
