The Portland State University Opera program proudly hosts a master class with New York-based soprano Karen Vuong. The class is free and open to the public. Attendees will enjoy learning from Ms. Vuong as she works with four PSU opera students on opera arias, followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session. During the same week as the master class at PSU, Ms. Vuong will be singing the title role in Portland Opera's Rusalka. She is an up-and-coming international artist and is a favored artist at Seattle Opera and Oper Frankfurt.
Ms. Vuong's 2022-2023 season includes singing the title role of Rusalka at Portland Opera, Diane Tran in Bound with Seattle Opera, and Gänsemagd in Königskinder at the Tiroler Festspiele. Other recent roles include Mimì in La Bohème at Seattle Opera, Suzel in L’amico Fritz at the Tiroler Festspiele, Maya Lin in the world premiere of Huang Ruo’s opera The Rift at Washington National Opera, Tina in Seattle Opera’s recent film production of Flight, Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel, Agata in a new production of Fioravanti’s Le cantatrici villane, Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica, Gerhilde in Die Walküre, and Micaëla in Carmen.
Previously, Ms. Vuong was part of the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt from 2013 to 2019, where she sang many leading roles. She was an inaugural member and two-year participant in Los Angeles Opera’s prestigious Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program, a program designed to support the future of opera by discovering and developing exceptionally gifted young artists. She studied at the Juilliard School in New York where she received the Novick Career Grant, and she has enjoyed great success at competitions including the Eastern Regional Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions and Operalia, and she was awarded the grand prize in the Marilyn Horne Lieder Competition.
