Chemistry Seminar | 3M Graphic Films and Sustainability

Friday March 1st 2024 3:15 PM - 4:20 PM

Every Friday, join the Department of Chemistry as we proudly host eminent scholars from throughout the field of chemistry at our weekly seminar series. Seminars are free and all are welcome.

This week, we're joined by Ryan Carns, an alum and business supply chain director at 3M.

Abstract: Global Market Insights estimates the graphic film market to be over $10B in 2023 (Report ID GM17799, January 2024). As regulatory changes and consumer preferences continue to shift toward more sustainable products, product offerings and process technologies must continue to evolve to meet the sustainability challenge without losing desired product performance. New products developed to meet these challenges may also be required to show evidence of their impact from cradle to grave. This presentation will discuss some of these regulation and preference changes, product performance considerations, and 3M Graphic and Architectural Film innovation.

Ryan Carns is the Business Supply Chain Director for global manufacturing of Graphic, Architectural, and Personal Auto Films for the Commercial Branding and Transportation Division at 3M. Over his 26-year career in manufacturing he has held various engineering and leadership positions with both 3M and Intel Corporation supporting Abrasive, Automotive, Aerospace, and Semiconductor industries prior to his current role. Ryan holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. in Chemistry from Portland State University.
