Violinist Tomás Cotik and pianist Shinmyung Rho present Johannes Brahms's complete works for violin and piano. The recital features Brahms's three violin sonatas, composed between 1878 and 1888. Together, these works trace the evolution of his mature style, from the lyricism and warmth of the First Sonata ("Regen") to the intimate character of the Second Sonata and the dramatic intensity and virtuosity of the Third Sonata. The program concludes with the Scherzo from the F.A.E. Sonata, a collaborative work written in 1853 by Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Albert Dietrich as a musical tribute to the celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim. The initials F.A.E. stand for Frei aber einsam ("Free but lonely"), Joachim's personal motto. Widely regarded as landmarks of the violin and piano repertoire, these works showcase Brahms's extraordinary contribution to chamber music and the equal partnership between violin and piano.
