A co-authored multi-day gathering of participatory events, discussions, and presentations by the PSU Art and Social Practice MFA Program.

Join us Friday through Sunday to partake in a collection of experimental and experiential offerings from the 15 Art + Social Practice MFA program artists working in socially engaged forms.

Assembly is our annual three-day gathering of participatory events, workshops, and presentations highlighting our MFA cohort's collaborative work and inspirations. From a roving social practice archive to an edible exploration of the art of the sandwich to a crosswalk parade with a group of fifth graders to a cumulative installation in a tree, there’s something for everyone at this year’s Assembly. Plus, artist talks from the graduating 2023 cohort, Laura Glazer, Diana Marcela Cuartas, Caryn Aasness, Becca Kauffman, and Kiara Walls.

We are also excited to present Portland artists Kayin Talton-Davis and Cleo Davis with our first-ever Art + Social Practice Collaboration Award, which recognizes and celebrates an artist team for their outstanding work rooted in collaboration. The award ceremony will take place Friday, June 9, at 4 pm in the school library.

Come in person to any or all of the weekend’s events!

About KSMoCA
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr School Museum of Contemporary Art (KSMoCA) is a contemporary art museum and social practice art project inside and in partnership with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School, a Pre K-5th grade public school in NE Portland, Oregon. Founded in 2014 by Portland State University professors Lisa Jarrett and Harrell Fletcher, KSMoCA connects public school students with internationally renowned contemporary artists through collaborative workshops, exhibitions, artist lectures, and site-specific commissions. Students learn through experience about museum practice and careers in the arts by participating as curators, preparators, artists, gallerists, writers, and docents.

KSMoCA reimagines how museums, public schools, and universities can affect people, culture, and perspectives by creating radical intersections for sharing resources across organizations. Programs are developed collaboratively with the Dr. MLK Jr School community, PSU students, and a team of supporting artists.
