Data science is a rapidly growing field as our economy, society, and daily life becomes increasingly dependent on data, from business to the health sciences. With Portland State's bachelor's degree in data science, you'll learn how to collect, visualize, approximate, optimize, make predictions, and interpret data using specialized software.

As a data science major, you'll not only build a mathematically and statistically rigorous foundation to extract meaningful data from large, complex datasets but through seminars and practicum, you'll gain hands-on experience.

About the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics is composed of 33 faculty and an average of 36 graduate teaching and research assistants and 16 adjuncts, 500 undergraduate students and 100+ graduate students were enrolled in our programs. Department is dedicated to excellence in research and teaching in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. Guided by the mission of Portland State University and by the principles of disciplinary excellence and cross-disciplinary engagement. We are particularly committed to building expertise and providing leadership in such areas as applied and computational mathematics and statistics and mathematics education.

Data Science Bachelor's Degree: Why PSU?

PSU's data science program brings together courses from mathematics, statistics, computer science and application areas. Many of our faculty are leading researchers in computational mathematics and statistics, and together with industry experts, will bring their expertise to your classes.

Our program offers lower-division training in calculus, linear algebra, computer science, and statistical methods, as well as basic programming skills in python, R and/or MATLAB. In the Data Science Seminar, guest lecturers will introduce examples and case studies and discuss ethics and bias in data science.

As you progress, you'll take specialized classes in statistics, large-scale data algorithms, computer science, optimization, and scientific computing for various hands-on data science applications.

Real-world applications are crucial, and you'll have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with a practicum.

You'll have the flexibility to explore and specialize in areas of applications that interest you and be prepared to boldly enter the 21st-century workforce.
