Virtual Viking is Portland State University’s student eNewsletter, published by University Communications on Mondays during Fall, Winter and Spring terms. The newsletter is meant to contribute to the academic success of PSU students and enhance their college experience.

PSU students are automatically subscribed to Virtual Viking for each term they are enrolled. If you are not a current student and would like to receive Virtual Viking, subscribe below.

Submission deadline

Submissions are due by noon on Tuesday, the week before Monday publication

Email submissions to virtualv@pdx.edu or submit them through the online form.

What to include in your submission

To be considered for publication, submissions must include:

  • Editable text — not just a flier, image, PDF or attachment
  • 80-120 words
  • Third-person language — no “we”, “us” or Our” language
  • At least one link for more information, registration or next steps
  • Key details, including date, time, location, audience and registration requirements, when applicable.

Submissions that do not include editable text, a link or the necessary details will be returned to the sender with a request to resubmit.

Sample submission

Example of a strong submission:

The Resource Center for Students with Children will host a fall clothing swap from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in Smith Memorial Student Union Suite 458. Students are invited to bring clean, gently used clothing or browse available items at no cost. The event is open to all students and registration is not required. Learn more on PSU Connect.

Why this works:

  • Includes date, time, location, audience and registration requirements
  • Written in third person
  • Includes a link for more information or registration
  • 80–120 words
  • Describes an event that is free, on campus and open to all students

Image requirements

Images/graphics are optional, but preferred. If included, images must be:

  • 600x400 pixels
  • Free of text-heavy design (0-5 words)
  • Approved for publication

Virtual Viking does not publish:

  • Fliers
  • QR codes
  • Screenshots of posters
  • Text-heavy graphics (more than 5 words)
  • Images where the main message is embedded in the graphic
  • Images that are not owned by PSU or not approved for publication by the owner

A short event or group title within an image is acceptable.

What Virtual Viking publishes

Virtual Viking prioritizes content that is timely, useful and broadly relevant to students.

For events, Virtual Viking generally promotes events that are:

  • Free
  • On campus
  • Open to all students
  • Welcoming and accessible to a broad student audience

Events should be appropriate for a general student newsletter and should not be limited to a narrow membership group, course, major, club or specialized program unless there is a clear campuswide reason to include them.

Virtual Viking generally does not promote individual student groups or recurring student group meetings. Student groups should use PSU Connect to promote meetings, events and opportunities. Virtual Viking may occasionally include broader student engagement opportunities when they are open to all students, have campuswide relevance and are also promoted by Find Your PSU.

Virtual Viking generally does not promote sales, fundraisers, donation drives, individual crowdfunding campaigns, student surveys or solicitations for research participation. Exceptions may be considered for university-sponsored initiatives that are broadly relevant to students and aligned with the purpose of the newsletter.

Publication timing

Events are generally published during the week they are happening.

Submissions may be considered for earlier publication when there is a compelling reason, such as an advance registration deadline, application deadline or limited-capacity opportunity. If earlier publication is requested, include the preferred publication date in the submission.

Requested publication dates are not guaranteed. Items are scheduled based on timing, audience relevance, available space and editorial discretion.

Publication and editing

Submission by the deadline does not guarantee publication. Items are selected based on timing, relevance, audience, available space and alignment with the purpose of the newsletter.

Items may run once or, when appropriate, more than once based on timing and available space. Repeated publication is not guaranteed.

Submissions may be edited for length, clarity, tone, style, accessibility and audience relevance. Edited items are not typically returned for review before publication.
