Professor Mellie Pullman has worked at Portland State University since 2005. Previously, she held appointments at Cornell University, London Business School, Colorado State University, Southern Methodist University, and University of Utah. Prior to her academic career, she was a quality manager at Black Diamond Equipment, test manager at Litton Industries, and landscape contractor in Park City, Utah. In addition, she has worked in many restaurants, started Utah’s first craft brewery, and engaged in other food and beverage entrepreneurial activities.
Professor Pullman has taught a wide variety of supply chain management courses and today predominantly works with online classes and programs. These courses include Food Supply Chain Management, Forecasting & Production Planning, Introduction to Supply Chain Management, Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development, and the Business of Craft Brewing. She developed the online Business of Craft Brewing Certificate program as well as multiple online courses for the online Masters of Supply Chain Management. Additionally, she has taught many different operations and supply chain management courses to executive, MBA, undergraduate and non-credit students in the US, Europe, and Wales as well as Study Abroad programs in China and Mexico.
Professor Pullman’s major research interests include social impact supply chain management, sustainability and supply chain management, food and beverage supply chains, and social impact supply chain management. She serves as Associate Editor or on the review board for multiple journals including Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Production and Operations Management, Operations Management Research, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development, and Sustainability, Accounting, Management and Policy Journal.
Currently, she is researching social enterprise supply chains, sustainability competitive dynamics, cannabis supply chain, and small producer food supply chains. She works with many regional sustainability-focused food and beverage producers, distributors, and retailers. In addition to authoring books on Craft Beverage Business Management, Food Supply Chain Management, Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Restaurant Design, and Service Operations, her articles have appeared in multiple journals and periodicals.
Professor Pullman is passionate about food and beverage systems. She spends her spare time at her farm in rural Oregon working with producers, writing books or articles, trekking or skiing in the Alps and Oregon mountains. She also loves to travel around the world learning from others engaged in the food system with social and environmental missions.
