Patrick McLaughlin is a Senior Instructor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at Portland State University. Mr. McLaughlin’s primary interests lie in structural engineering with extensive experience in structural analysis, building codes, construction support services, and building information modelling. As an instructor his teaching philosophy is rooted in the principles of the ASCE ExCEEd teaching methodology and he believes interest and retention of material is strongest when the student understands how to apply their knowledge to the real world. He is an active member in the professional chapters of the Structural Engineers Association of Oregon (SEAO) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and is co-advisor to the student chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) at PSU. Mr. McLaughlin received his bachelors in civil engineering from Duke University and his masters in civil engineering from North Carolina State University. He is a licensed civil and structural engineer and has over 20 years of professional experience as a practicing engineer.
