Jacklyn Kohon, PhD is a Senior Research Associate II at the Institute on Aging at Portland State University and a Visiting Researcher at the Research Center for Sustainability and Environment at Shiga University in Japan. Her research focuses primarily on the intersections of community health, environmental change, and health inequities, particularly focusing on older adults. Dr. Kohon is a member of the Gerontological Society of America’s Climate Change and Aging Interest Group.

Dr. Kohon returned to the Institute on Aging after several years away, which included serving as Assistant Professor of Urban Sociology in the Global Studies program at Akita International University in Japan. In this role, she taught courses in environmental sociology, urban sociology, social problems, sustainable community development, and research methods. Dr. Kohon has conducted research in Japan on the challenges and opportunities of a “super aging” society and the key social issues involved in district-scale urban sustainability planning.

Recent research includes mapping extreme heat vulnerability among older adults and an analysis of climate adaptation policy focusing on the needs of older adults. She is currently leading a project focusing on diversity, inclusion, and well-being among direct care workers and developing a project related to the impacts of wildfires on assisted living and residential care communities in Oregon.
