Emily Fitzgerald is a socially engaged artist, photographer, storyteller, and educator. Through her work, she investigates what it means to collectively tell a story, equally prioritize the relational and the aesthetic, collaboratively make conceptual and visual decisions, and co-author a body of work with the 'subject.' Her work is responsive, participatory, and site-specific. Emily brings large-scale art installations into non-traditional, public, and unexpected places in order to deepen our understanding and reframe our ways of relating to one another. Whether working with more traditional forms of photography or a socially engaged practice, her work explores themes of caregiving, community networks, intergenerational relationships, and home.

Her work has been shown at the Contemporary at Blue Star, TriMet bus stops, Community for Positive Aging, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, and many other public sites. Grants from Texas State University, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts (Precipice Fund), and the Regional Arts & Culture Council have supported her work.

She is the co-founder of MATTER Gallery and Works Progress Agency. She holds an MFA in Art and Social Practice from Portland State University and a BA in Photography from Prescott College.
