Fields of Expertise:
history of the U.S. family; environmental history; Pacific Northwest history; American perceptions of Africa; comparative education.

He is the author of seven books, including:

  • From Tarzan to Dreams from My Father: Africa in the US Imagination (Bloomsbury, 2017)
  • The American Family: From Obligation to Freedom (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011)
  • Environmentalism (Pearson, 2011)
  • Oregon’s Promise: An Interpretive History (OSU, 2003)
  • What Trouble I Have Seen: A History of Violence against Wives (Harvard, 1996)

His articles have appeared in: African IdentitiesAfrica TodayGhana StudiesEthnohistory, the Journal of Interdisciplinary History, the Mennonite Quarterly Review, the Museum Studies Journal, and Journal of Family Violence, and Environmental History, among others.  

President of Yo Ghana!, a 501c3 nonprofit that links schools in Ghana and the Pacific Northwest.
