April Aster is the Director of Student Legal Services. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and law degree from Lewis and Clark Law School. April has been committed to public service her entire career. Before joining Portland State University in 2014, April served in various roles at local non-profits, advocating for the legal needs of Oregonians from renters and the LGBTQIA+ community to survivors of abuse and families in transition.
At PSU, April demonstrates an unwavering commitment to students and their success and well-being by ensuring access to justice and removing barriers to their academic goals. Under her leadership, Student Legal Services has implemented innovative practices to better serve students, including streamlining appointment scheduling and eliminating unnecessary fees. She has also expanded access to crucial immigration law services and increased pre-law programming, adapting the office to meet the evolving needs of the student body.
April’s dedication extends beyond the direct services of SLS. She fosters strong relationships with campus partners, serving on committees such as the PSU Commission on Sexuality and Gender Equity (SAGE) and collaborating with resources like the Center for Student Health and Counseling, the Basic Needs Hub, the Confidential Advocates Program, and the Queer Resource Center to provide holistic support to students. Her deep understanding of the interconnectedness of campus resources has been instrumental in aiding students facing complex challenges. Her passion for inclusivity is evident in her expansion of name and gender change services and within the legal community through her advocacy for more inclusive, plain language, greater access to legal services, and alternative pathways to the legal profession.
A testament to her impact is the enduring connections she maintains with former student workers, interns, staff, and even clients, who continue to rely on her as a champion in their professional pursuits.
