FAQs: Transferring to PSU

This is good to discuss with a PSU Transfer Advisor, and the earlier, the better. Advisors have Connection Hours on PCC campuses, if you want to drop in or make an appointment. Virtual meetings are also available. 

We have a few tools that can be helpful to students just starting out at a community college or those who are returning to finish a four year degree after a long break. 

Transfer Advising Guides: These can help you plan which courses to take at the community college and which courses to take at PSU.

Transferology: Plug in your course to see how your credits will transfer to Portland State University.

To be admitted to PSU as a transfer student, you need to have 30 transferable credits, WR 121 with a C- grade or higher, and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25. To be admitted, you should fill out the PSU application and have official transcripts sent to PSU from every school where you have earned college credits, as well as have AP/IB scores sent. You can talk with an admissions counselor or a transfer advisor about the admissions process, deadlines, and steps to transfer.

This answer will be different for different people! Some majors require more coursework at PSU than others and it will make sense to transfer earlier. Many majors can be completed well if you transfer after earning 90 credits or more. You do not need to earn an associates degree to be able to transfer, but it may make sense to do so. If you are close to 30 credits and have taken WR 121, we recommend that you talk with a PSU advisor about the best timeline for transfer based on your individual academic, personal, and professional goals.

Portland State’s Tuition-Free Degree program is our guarantee to cover any remaining tuition balance up to 16 credits/term after all other grants are applied for Pell eligible Oregonians who enroll in 6 or more credits in Fall term. For consideration for this program, as well as many others, submit your FAFSA by March 1, 2027 for 2027-28. Be sure to enter PSU’s school code, 003216. 

Oregon residents who are not eligible to complete the FAFSA should complete the ORSAA at www.oregonstudentaid.gov for State of Oregon grant consideration.

PSU’s General Scholarship Application for 2027-28 opens November 1st, 2026 and closes March 1st, 2027. You must be admitted to PSU prior to gaining access to complete the application
