Statement on November 22 incident

Portland State University Campus Public Safety officers responded to calls of a disturbance near campus after 8 p.m. Thursday. An unidentified man was reported yelling and running in the street near SW 6th Ave. and SW Mill St.

The man was agitated and struggled with officers, injuring a campus police officer. Campus Public Safety called for assistance from the Portland Police Bureau, and two PPB officers responded to the scene.

The man was restrained and transported to the hospital. Portland Police reported the man suffered a medical event and died. The campus police officer was treated for injuries at the hospital and released.

Under PSU policy, the four responding CPSO officers are on paid administrative leave pending further investigation. The two Portland Police officers also are on paid administrative leave. PSU is cooperating with Portland Police in the incident investigation.
