PSU reaffirms support for DACA students

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program remains unresolved nationally, despite a deadline set for today.  Federal court action will allow renewal application to the program, but provides no long term solution.  For the DACA students at Portland State University -- our Dreamers -- and throughout our community, this means continuing anxiety and uncertainty.

One of the first communications that I sent in September to the University community affirmed PSU’s commitment to support these students and their families.  Today, I reiterate that pledge and offer a reminder that we provide a wide range of support and resources on campus. Those include Latino Student Services, La Casa Latina and Student Legal Services.  We are deeply committed to offering a safe, compassionate environment as students continue their PSU education.

I also want to thank ASPSU and others for sponsoring a community event, #DreamersAreHereToStay, that will be held today, Monday, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Smith Memorial Student Union Multicultural Student Center (SMSU 228).  It will be an opportunity for affected students to learn more about PSU’s array of services and for our community to support our students and learn more about advocacy for a long-term solution.

I will close this letter as I did back in September.  You belong at PSU, and together, we are Portland State University.

Sincerely,
Prof. Rahmat Shoureshi
President
