PSU concerned about travel ban impact on students

Portland State University is concerned that Tuesday's Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling to uphold the travel ban will have a chilling effect on international students coming to study at PSU and other U.S. universities.

It is important to note that the third version of the travel ban will not have the same impact on students and visiting scholars as the original ban from January 2017. Under the current version, international students or scholars who are studying at a U.S. university will be able to continue.

Portland State has no students or scholars from North Korea or Somalia. We currently have two students from Syria. Under the current travel ban, those students would not be permitted back in the United States if they return to Syria.  We have 24 students from Iran, 16 from Libya, two from Yemen and five from Venezuela. Students with visas from those nations can continue to travel to and from the United States under the latest restrictions, though they will face heightened security checks and may run the risk of not being able to secure visas to return to the United States. PSU is communicating with those students to respond to their concerns about how the court ruling impacts their studies at Portland State.
