Having a teacher who looks like you can help affirm identity, boost confidence and build meaningful relationships. Leaders at PSU, like Ian Twiss, know firsthand the value of diversity in education, and are working to address this gap in representation. 

Since its founding in 1946, Portland State has been many things: An institution founded to serve veterans returning home from war. A commuter campus. A home for “nontraditional” students. A pathway for social mobility.

It’s still those things — while also leaning into its present and future as a majority-BIPOC university.

The street outside Portland State’s Native American Student and Community Center is being renamed for Indigenous leader Rose Hill, a fitting tribute for a woman who was integral in helping bring the center to fruition and has been an advocate for countless Native students at PSU.
