Raja Timihiri: MFA Candidate Graduate Presentation

Wednesday June 1st 2022 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Join us for a graduate project presentation by MFA candidate Raja Timihiri.

In her recent body of work, Raja Timihiri responds to events and interactions that surround
her in daily life. Her paintings and drawings are a result of an intuitive and process-based
approach focused on spontaneous responses to material conversations and directed by loose
associations. A slowing down of pace punctuates her making as she responds to reverberations
generated from interactions and expectations.

Each work is a deliberate and contemplative visual response that embraces unforced
mark-making. Raja focuses on experimentation that promotes trusting her intuitive voice and
encourages a sense of curiosity and imagination.

About the Artist

Raja Timihiri is a visual artist and current MFA candidate in Contemporary Art Practice.
She uses multiple media to create paintings, drawings, monotypes and paper maché sculptures.
Raja reflects on the complexity of the inner self, engaging with topics of imagination, self
compassion and authentic being. She is interested in expressing a felt experience through
spontaneous and slow-paced engagement with the materials she uses. This results in a visual
language that embraces unforced mark-making and layered connections that emerge in the
moment.

Prior to joining the MFA program at Portland State University, Raja obtained a certificate in
Studio Art practice from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2019. She is also a graduate of
Knox College (2012) and Washington University in St. Louis (2013). She currently lives and
works in Portland OR.
