The Sistema de Alerta Sísmica Mexicano is the world's oldest public earthquake early warning system. This talk by Elizabeth Reddy, the author of the new book ¡Alerta! - Engineering on Shaky Ground (forthcoming in 2023 MIT Press), draws on ethnographic and archival research to analyze a Mexican effort to change relationships between the environment, society, and technology. This talk will interrogate engineering approaches to engaging with the extended technologies, places, and politics that early warnings rely on and frames questions about what environmental monitoring and risk mitigation technology might do for those who build and maintain it.
