Rob Eshman, Senior Contributing Columnist of the Forward, delivers the 18th Annual Gus and Libby Solomon Memorial Lecture.
Every day, it seems, our headlines include shocking incidences of hate speech, antisemitic graffiti, conspiracy theories, and assaults on the visibly Orthodox. Journalism has an important role to play in reporting, analyzing, interrogating, and debating these phenomena.
Rob Eshman will discuss the challenges that journalists – and especially Jewish journalists – face in covering antisemitism. Where are the lines between calling out hatred and platforming it? How do we balance coverage of these threats and stereotypes with those targeting more vulnerable minorities? Why is this happening in the first place — and how scared should Jews be?
This event is sponsored by Richard B. Solomon and Alyce Flitcraft, presented by The Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies, and co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, Oregon Jewish Community Foundation, the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, PSU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and PSU Department of Communication.
