As the recipient of the 2024 Will Bruder Architectural Travel Grant, Tatjana Babic examines the architectural evolution of the "konak," an Ottoman-era villa for the elite, and its influence on both Balkan and Western European architecture. Drawing from research and site visits to Safranbolu, Turkey, and Belgrade, Serbia, Tatjana will explore how the konak evolved in the Balkans as Western European styles emerged at the end of the Turkish occupation. The talk will also address the impact of these architectural traditions on modernist design, particularly Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye (1928), which incorporates elements of the konak. Through this comparison, the lecture will highlight how architecture reflects cultural intersections and evolving values over time.
