Fridays@1 | Front Doors on Back Alleys: Portland Alley Housing and the Missing Middle

Friday October 25th 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join us on Friday, October 25th, as Jonathan Bolch will discuss his ongoing interest in small-scale infill housing and opportunities he sees for creative development offered on Portland’s alley-facing lots based on the recent zoning code changes under the Residential Infill Project. He will share insights gained from his ongoing 2023 Van Evera Bailey Fellowship from the Architecture Foundation of Oregon, which has funded research into Portland’s alleys, infill housing, and travel abroad to see relevant precedents in London and Kyoto. His research has included working with PSU students at the School of Architecture, where he has taught several housing design studios focused on alley-infill projects.

There are approximately 76 miles of alleyways in Portland and the presentation will cover the unique potential provided on these properties to thoughtfully take advantage of these underutilized spaces to create new types of affordable infill housing and generate a new network of urban experiences and connections that can co-exist with and complement the character of existing streetscapes.

Who is Jonathan Bolch?

Additionally, his firm’s projects include the Grand Award Winner for ADU Design in the 2021 Salt Lake City Empowered Living Design Competition.

What is Friday@1?

On most Fridays at 1 p.m. during the academic term, PSU School of Architecture students and faculty gather to hear from professional designers and architects, academics, visiting artists, innovators, and students in the program. Friday@1 is a perfect way to wrap up each week of intense creativity in the studio and get inspired for the productive weekend ahead.
