Fridays@1 | Building for Disaster in the PNW: What Writing a Children's Book about the "Big One" Taught Me about City Planning

Friday January 31st 2025 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Join us this Friday in welcoming Henry Latourette Miller as he talks about his 7 years of research to create a local disaster preparedness book for kids. Henry learned a lot about the hazards facing communities in the Pacific Northwest, how bad city planning can overwhelm even the best-prepared household, and why it is so critical to include Sasquatch in any book about the region.

Who is Henry Miller?

Henry is an urbanist, advocate, and writer with a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from Portland State University. He spent nearly three years winning grants and innovating game-changing programs at the Portland metro’s largest street user advocate, The Street Trust. He is currently improving streetscapes, exploring e-mobility solutions, and connecting communities for the City of Tigard as their transportation planner.

In his spare time, he freelances articles on travel, history, technology, planning, and city life. His writing has been featured in The Oregonian, Street Roots, The Corvallis Advocate, PDX Monthly, Willamette Week, Portland Tribune, BikePortland, and more. He has also co-produced a history podcast called Small Town America, co-written a screenplay for a documentary about Portland’s unique strip club scene, and co-written a short film that was produced and screened at several indie festivals.

Portland State University’s Ooligan Press will publish his first book, a graphic novel designed to encourage young people to prepare for natural disasters, in 2024.

What is Friday@1?

On most Fridays at 1 p.m. during the academic term, PSU School of Architecture students and faculty gather to hear from professional designers and architects, academics, visiting artists, innovators, and students in the program. Friday@1 is a perfect way to wrap up each week of intense creativity in the studio and get inspired for the productive weekend ahead.

Free and Open to the public. All are welcome.
