Torrey Kulow, PhD, is an associate professor in the Secondary Graduate Teacher Education Program, specializing in mathematics education. Her focus is on understanding teacher candidate and mentor teacher collaborative learning of equity-oriented math instruction in clinical experience and supporting teachers in teaching mathematics for social justice. Kulow taught middle school mathematics in Massachusetts prior to getting her master’s degree and PhD in curriculum and instruction (in the area of mathematics education) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Dr. Kulow has been involved in multiple grants. She is the co-principal investigator of the National Science Foundation-funded Co-learning Math Teaching Project that has iteratively developed and studied the use of protocols that support teacher candidates and mentor teachers in collaboratively learning equity-oriented math instruction in the clinical experience. Prior to working at Portland State University, she was a postdoctoral researcher on the Investigating Proportional Relationships from Two Perspectives (InPReP2) project also funded by the National Science Foundation. In addition, she was the recipient of the Math in Real Life 2019-2021 Biennium grant funded by the Oregon Department of Education, leading professional development experiences for inservice Secondary math teachers to help them develop and implement real-life and social justice mathematics lessons in their classrooms.
