Biography
Dr. Marcus Sharpe hails from Brooklyn, NY. His undergraduate education was completed in the behavioral sciences at Concordia College in Bronxville, NY. He later earned a master’s degree and completed his doctoral studies in clinical psychology with an emphasis in multicultural-community psychology at the Los Angeles campus of the California School of Professional Psychology. His pre-doctoral internship and postdoctoral residency were both completed at Wright Institute Los Angeles where Dr. Sharpe also earned certification in psychoanalytic psychotherapy under the tutelage of Drs. Dodd Cohen, Ellen Smith-Graff, Peter Wolson, Leigh Tobias, Paulene Popek, Allen Yasser, and Hedda Bolgar, respectively.
With clinical expertise in the areas of diagnosing and treating psychological trauma within the African-American community, men and masculinities, issues impacting the health and psychological well-being of same-gender loving (SGL) men, addictive behaviors, juvenile delinquency, and cross-cultural dimensions of death and dying, Dr. Sharpe has more than a decade of experience assisting others in embracing healthy living while learning to adopt more culturally congruent means through which to cope with economic, social, environmental, and familial stressors.
Dr. Sharpe has previously held professional positions within the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Oregon State University, the Juvenile Justice Division of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, the California Youth Authority, the San Fernando Valley Child & Family Guidance Center, and Gay & Lesbian Adolescent Social Services.
Since his relocation to Oregon, Dr. Sharpe continues to serve as an educator, mentor, advocate, and community consultant. He has lent his time and expertise to a multitude of community issues including discussions related to violence and community policing, self-care for those living with HIV/AIDS, increasing cultural competency for White caregivers raising Black children, increasing postsecondary educational opportunities for students of color in Oregon, and addressing the needs of African-American students in attendance at predominantly White institutions (PWI). Currently a consultant for the Educational Testing Service (ETS), Dr. Sharpe also serves on the Board of Directors for the American Men’s Studies Association (AMSA), and has previously served as an appointed member of the Oregon Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Task Force.
