The energy industry is an important cornerstone of the regional economy, and a number of Portland State's master’s degree graduates are active in the industry. For a number of years, several PSU departments have offered graduate courses focusing on energy issues and techniques for energy analysis. The Graduate Certificate in Energy Policy and Management brings these classes together in a program designed to create a foundation of knowledge about the energy industry. The program allows flexible graduate coursework combinations so that students can customize their studies to match their goals and interests.
Five PSU graduate programs have worked closely with the regional energy industry to design this certificate, including:

Portland State is well-known for its focus on community service and engagement, and the Mark O. Partnerships and cooperative arrangements exist within the Oregon University System (which includes Oregon State University, Oregon Health & Science University, University of Oregon, and more) as well as with multiple health, human service, community, and governmental agencies in Portland, across Oregon, and nationally.

Our faculty members and instructors are leading researchers and practitioners in the field of public administration. Their diverse array of expertise, experiences, and interests include local and regional government, public finance and law, nonprofit management, leadership, sustainability, health management and policy, natural resources policy, and much more. Faculty members continually practice and expand their skills through scholarship and service, and our students have the opportunity to work closely with these leaders in the classroom, through funded research, and technical assistance projects.

The Graduate Certificate in Energy Policy and Management is targeted to three types of students:
- Industry Professionals: employees working in the energy industry who wish to broaden their training, acquire specific skills, and/or increase their knowledge of current issues in energy policy and management.
- Graduate Students: PSU graduate students who enrolled in a PSU graduate degree program and wish to add energy policy and management expertise to their course of study.
- Prospective Employees: industry employees who wish to gain knowledge and skills that will enhance their employment prospects.
