Are you considering whether a teaching career is right for you?

Are you planning to apply to a GTEP program at Portland State or elsewhere after graduation? Take advantage of the wisdom and advice of three recent History graduates and current (or newly finished) GTEP students in this panel discussion! Panelists will share their experiences in PSU’s GTEP program and in their classrooms.

Professor John Ott, Chair of the History Department, will facilitate the conversation.

Christian Graham graduated from PSU with a BA in History in 2020, and he worked through the GTEP program to get his MEd in Curriculum and Instruction in 2021. While studying education, Christian focused on Culturally Sustaining and Revitalizing Pedagogy. CSRP focuses on sustaining language and culture within the classroom by working with communities impacted by colonization. After graduating from PSU, Christian went to an Iñupiaq village in Northwest Alaska named Kingigan (Wales, AK). He worked there for a year as a Social Studies and English Language Arts teacher at Kingikmiut School before transferring to the Northwest Alaska Career and Technical Center in Sitnasuak, (Nome, AK). As a NACTEC teacher, Christian currently works to provide career and technical education to students from Kingigan and the 14 other villages within the Bering Strait School District. Some of the courses he teaches include Maritime Careers and Safety, Heavy Equipment Operation, Early Childhood Education, Arctic Survival, and Driver's Education. He will transfer back to Kingikmiut School in August of 2023.

Breanne Johnson graduated from Portland State University in 2020 with a BS in History. While at PSU, Breanne focused on postcolonial studies and served as president of the Phi Beta chapter of Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society. Following graduation, she completed pre-requisite classes in preparation for the GTEP program which she is currently enrolled in at the PSU College of Education. She is a student teacher of 8th grade social studies at George Middle School in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland.

Darren Letendre graduated from PSU in 2021 with a degree in history specializing in American history.
