Charles W. Holland received the B.S. degree in Engineering from the University of Hartford in 1983, and the M.S. and PhD degrees, both in Acoustics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1985 and 1991 respectively. His PhD thesis addressed acoustic propagation through, and interface waves in poro-viscoelastic marine sediments. From 1985-1996, he conducted research in ocean and sediment acoustics at Planning Systems Inc., Virginia. In 1996, he joined the NATO Undersea Research Centre in La Spezia, Italy where he developed seabed reflection and scattering measurement and geoacoustic parameter estimation techniques. In 2001 he joined the Applied Research Laboratory at the Pennsylvania State University and in 2020 he joined Portland State University where he continues his research in both theoretical and experimental aspects of ocean waveguide and seafloor acoustics. Dr. Holland is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.

Research Interest and Expertise:

  • Acoustical Oceanography: acoustic remote sensing;  seafloor scattering/reflection
  • Underwater Acoustics: acoustic propagation, reverberation; ocean environmental effects on sonar systems
