Process for Differential Pay

Differential Pay includes Geographic Area Pay, Special Duty Pay, Special Qualifications Pay, Shift Differential, Lead Work Differential and Work Out-of-Classification. Article 20, Differential Pay, of the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) includes additional information on these topics. Below are the Human Resources processes for requesting Lead Work Differential and Work Out-of-Classification.

Shift Differential

In order to qualify for the SD, an employee must be in a job classification which is allocated to Salary Range 23 or below. The SD applies to work between 6pm and and 6am and for each hour or major portion thereof worked on Saturday and Sunday. This shall apply to all employees except temporary assignments. Please see Article 20 section 4 Shift Differential, in the SEIU contract for additional information.

Lead Work Differential – Classified Employees

Article 20, Section 5 of the SEIU CBA outlines the requirements for lead work pay differential. The following is the process for assigning lead work:

1. Fill out the Lead Work Differential Request Form.

2. Attach a copy of the memo sent to the employee informing them of their Lead Work assignment. This is not a letter of offer.

3. Ensure that the signature portion of the paperwork is complete.

4. Send the paperwork to the Office of Human Resources, attention Compensation & Classification. If this is a grant-related position, route the paperwork through Research Accounting prior to sending to HR.

5. After the paperwork is received in HR it will be audited, and if there are no questions concerning the request, the change in pay will be automatically entered into the payroll system.

Work Out-of-Classification – Classified Employees

Article 20 – Differential Pay, Section 6 of the SEIU CBA outlines the requirements for Work Out-of-Classification. The following is the process for assigning work out-of-class:

1. Fill out the Work Out-of-Class Form.

2. Attach a copy of the justification given to the employee informing them of their out-of-class duties.

3. Ensure that the signature portion of the paperwork is complete.

4. Send the paperwork to the Office of Human Resources, attention Compensation & Classification.

5. After the paperwork is received in HR it will be audited, and if there are no questions about the request, the change in pay will be automatically entered into the payroll system.
