Benefits Eligibility

Benefits vary slightly for each type of position at PSU:

  • Unclassified employees (non-represented and employees represented by AAUP)
    • Working at least half-time for the academic year:
      • PSU pays 95% of the premiums for medical, dental and vision for the employee and their eligible dependents. Employees pay 5% of the premium cost.
  • Classified employees (represented by SEIU)
    • Working at least .75 FTE:
      • PSU pays 95% of the premiums for medical, dental and vision for the employee and their eligible dependents. Employees are responsible for 5% of the premium cost. If employees choose Providence Choice the cost share is 3% and PSU pays 97%.
    • Working less than .75 FTE:
      • Eligible for health benefits, but share the premium cost prorated based on hours worked. Accrue vacation, sick, and personal leave on a prorated basis.
  • Postdoctoral Scholars
    • Working at least .5 FTE:
      • PSU pays 95% of the premiums for medical, dental and vision for the employee and their eligible dependents
  • PSU Faculty Association (AFT) members working less than half-time also have an opportunity to enroll in health insurance if they are currently uninsured or self-insured through an individual policy without health benefits from another source. More information is available at the Portland State University Faculty Association (PSUFA) website.

Note: To sustain benefits an employee must remain in a benefits eligible position listed above and have 80 hours of paid time in their pay.

If an employee has less then 80 hours of pay in a pay period then benefits will end that month. A COBRA notice will then be sent. Once an employee has 80 hours of pay we will reinstate benefits effective the following month. Flexible spending accounts can not be reinstated and must complete a form to reistate them.

Example 1: If an unclassified staff receives 80 hrs of pay in February's pay, then their benefits end the end of March.

Example 2: If a full time classified staff works until the end of March they may have 80 hrs of pay in their April pay (March 16th-April 15th), which would extend their benefits until the end of May.
