Building a Foundation for Growth

The most rewarding careers are often built on continuous learning, curiosity, and a commitment to helping others succeed. For Karly Tell, Portland State University’s Master of Taxation program has provided an opportunity to deepen her expertise, strengthen her leadership skills, and expand the impact she makes for clients, colleagues, and the accounting profession.

Karly’s journey with PSU began when she earned her undergraduate degree in accounting in 2013. Shortly after graduation, she joined Irvine & Company, where she quickly discovered a passion for the analytical nature of tax and the challenge of solving complex problems.

“I quickly found myself drawn to tax because of its analytical nature and the constant opportunity to solve complex problems,” she shared. “I realized the value that developing a deeper technical foundation would give my career.”

As her responsibilities grew, so did her desire to strengthen her expertise and expand the value she could provide to clients, leading her back to Portland State University.

Strengthening Expertise

For Karly, the Master of Taxation program represents more than an academic credential. It is an opportunity to build advanced knowledge, sharpen critical thinking skills, and immediately apply what she learns to real-world client challenges.

Through rigorous coursework and practical application, the program has helped her deepen her technical expertise while strengthening her ability to navigate ambiguity, analyze complex situations, and communicate solutions with clarity.

“The Master of Taxation at PSU provides a rigorous, practical way to strengthen that expertise and apply it directly to my work,” she said.

In a profession that is constantly evolving, Karly views this combination of technical knowledge and strategic thinking as essential to creating meaningful impact for clients and organizations.

Driving Change as a Partner and Trusted Advisor

Today, Karly serves as a Partner at Irvine & Company, where she provides tax compliance, cost accounting, and advisory services for individuals and closely held businesses.

While technical expertise remains a critical part of her work, her role extends far beyond compliance. She helps clients navigate complex financial situations, understand their options, and make informed decisions that support their long-term goals.

Over time, her career has evolved from preparing and reviewing tax work to serving as a trusted advisor, helping clients proactively plan for the future and navigate change with confidence.

Equally important is her commitment to mentoring and developing staff. By sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and helping others grow professionally, she is contributing to the next generation of accounting and tax professionals.

Giving Back Through Leadership and Service

Karly’s commitment to impact extends beyond her work with clients. As a member of the Accounting Advisory Board (AAB), she helps strengthen the connection between academia and industry, ensuring students are prepared for the realities of a rapidly changing profession.

“The accounting and tax landscape continues to evolve quickly, and it’s important that programs equip students with both technical expertise, soft skills, and practical insight,” she explained.

Her involvement allows her to stay connected to the PSU community while helping shape opportunities for future students. It is also a way of giving back to a profession and university that have played an important role in her own development.

The Reward of a Career Built on Purpose

When reflecting on her career, Karly points to three sources of fulfillment: intellectual challenge, mentorship, and client impact.

No two tax situations are the same, which keeps the work engaging and continually presents opportunities to learn. She also finds deep satisfaction in helping colleagues build confidence and advance in their careers.

But what stands out most is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference for clients.

“Tax is often seen as purely compliance driven, but in reality, there is a significant advisory component,” she said. “Helping clients understand their options, avoid pitfalls, and make informed decisions is incredibly rewarding.”

For Karly, the most meaningful part of her career has been building trusted relationships and helping people move forward with clarity and confidence.

Continuing to Learn, Lead, and Create Impact

From earning her accounting degree at Portland State University to becoming a Partner at Irvine & Company while pursuing a Master of Taxation, Karly’s journey reflects the power of continuous learning, professional growth, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact.

As she continues through PSU’s Master of Taxation program, she is strengthening the expertise, leadership skills, and strategic perspective that allow her to better serve clients, mentor future professionals, and contribute to the evolving accounting profession.

For Karly, success has never been defined solely by a title or promotion. It has been shaped by a dedication to lifelong learning, helping others grow, and creating value through her work. Her experience in PSU’s Master of Taxation program demonstrates how graduate education can deepen expertise, build confidence, and prepare professionals to lead in a complex and changing industry. For prospective students considering their next step, Karly’s story is a reminder that investing in yourself can open doors to new opportunities, greater impact, and lasting career growth.
