Unpaid Internships

The School of Business Career Center encourages all employers to pay interns.

  • Employers posting internships in Handshake should review the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division guidelines on compensation. The DOL website provides information on whether workers are considered unpaid interns or paid employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). It is expected that employers who post internships are in compliance with these criteria.
  • The School of Business Career Center will not advertise unpaid internships at for-profit employers on internal communication channels to business students. Non-profit employers are exempt from this advertising restriction.
  • Studies have shown that unpaid internships unfairly disadvantage students from marginalized communities and negatively impact students career development.
