Meet our panelists:
Nidal Betare is currently a visiting scholar with the Middle East Study Center here at PSU. Before co-founding and working as the Managing Director of DC-based People Demand Change, Nidal Betare held numerous positions working with civil society and refugee communities of Palestine, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon. He has also worked as a freelance researcher with NPR and as an interpreter for McClatchy. Mr. Betare has been widely published and has spoken on numerous panels, including the Annual World Bank meeting in 2013, the UN in New York City and Tokyo, Japan, and at a variety of universities around the United States on the conflicts across the Arab region. Mr. Betare holds a Master's in Political Sociology.

Chase Petrie serves as the Fund Development Manager at Green Empowerment where he works with various community partners and funders to ensure Green Empowerment is realizing its development goals and maximizing its global impact. He also serves on the Global PDX Board.
Sheila Walters Matsuda was raised in International Development; she was raised in Ethiopia and Lebanon by parents who trained locals in irrigation techniques. She has taught Japanese language and culture to all ages for many years and spent one year living in Malawi with Peace Corps Response. As Director of Operations for a Micronesian non-profit in Honolulu, she built capacity for the non-English-speaking immigrant community by expanding their access to healthcare by developing information distribution systems in 7 different languages. Currently, she is the Vice President of an INGO that supports community-based infrastructure development in Tanzania. She also teach Global Studies at PCC and continues to teach Japanese language and culture online. (JET, Peace Corps & GlobalPDX board member)
Blake Peters serves as the executive Director of Carpe Mundi. He has over 20 years of leadership experience in Portland as Head of the German International School, where he helped to grow a multilingual, multicultural learning environment rooted in global citizenship and has been a German Honrorary Consul since 2018.
