FLASH Program

Freshman Learners Acquiring Skills in Higher Education

How FLASH Works

This program starts fall term and provide on-campus employment and development opportunities to first-year students. The program is designed to provide resources and support to freshmen who may be seeking their first paid job and aspire to become future leaders on campus. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Current Portland State University degree seeking student with freshman class standing (defined as having fewer than 30 completed college credits)
  • Minimum enrollment of 6 undergraduate credits for three out of four terms in the year
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA and maintain good academic standing during employment
  • Positive attitude
  • Successfully complete a background check
  • Must be available to attend multiple mandatory training's. See below for dates and times. 

How to Apply

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2017-18 academic year. Look for more information in September 2018 for the 2018-19 academic year.

Mandatory FLASH Employee Trainings

Below are mandatory training dates required of you to attend if you were hired through the FLASH Program. Part of your consideration for a position is based on being able to attend all sessions. Please make sure you look at your schedules!

  • Orientation: Saturday, November 18 - 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • FLASH Brunch: Friday, December 1 - 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • FLASH CPR Training: Monday, December 11 - 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. 
  • Session #1: Friday, January 12 - 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #2: Friday, January 26 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #3: Friday, February 9- 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #4: Friday, February 23 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #5: Friday, March 9 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #6: Friday, April 6 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #7: Friday, April 20 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #8: Friday, May 4 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 
  • Session #9: (Service Capstone) Friday, May 18- 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
